The 3 Types of Terracotta Clay Tiles That Are Currently Available In the Market

The terracotta tile is the type of tile which is manufactured from molded and baked clay. It has been in use as a roofing material for thousands of years and there are very many reasons for this. One being that it is made from a naturally occurring, eco friendly material which is readily available throughout the world. Two it has several advantages which are working in its favor, such as; it’s less absorbent compared to its peers, is lighter, durable and has a longer shelf-life.

Small wonder then, that it is the material of choice for roofing for most people. There are 3 major types of such terracotta tiles and we are going to explore them, in some depth, in this article;

Natural Terracotta Tiles – This type of tile has maintains the natural deep red color of baked clay and it will eventually succumb to the elements and fade with time.

Engobed Terracotta Tiles – This type of terracotta tile is often multi-colored due to the mixing of the foundational clay with mineral colorants and water. This type has greater resistance and copes well with wild fluctuations of temperature.

Glazed Terracotta Tiles – On the other hand this type of tile is the strongest of the two mentioned above as it’s coating is made from glassy silicates (silicon dioxide) which are baked together with the clay at temperatures exceeding 2,500 degrees Celsius.

The molten silicates form an impenetrable layer over the tile thus making it less absorptive. It also increases the mechanical and chemical integrity of the tile making it not only durable but beautiful to behold.
